BREAKING: The WNBA will grow from 12 teams to 18 by 2030—with Cleveland joining in 2028, Detroit in 2029, and Philadelphia in 2030. Each of the new franchises will be backed by NBA ownership. Cleveland’s team will be owned by Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, Detroit by Pistons owner Tom Gores and partners, and Philadelphia by Josh Harris, who also owns the 76ers. Each group paid a $250 million expansion fee. This follows the league’s 2025 launch of the Golden State Valkyries and upcoming teams in Toronto and Portland. 📈📈
